The design capabilities of Standard's engineering team began in 1957 when the Tampa Prestress Yard was established. Since that time, we have been seeking out the most challenging concrete designs and working diligently to please the customer. The Standard team is extremely proud of their Design/Build work on projects such as the Osceola County, Florida Disney World - Reedy Creek Project. The engineering firm of Berger/ABAM, Washington, DC was brought on board for collaboration on the project. This unique "top-down" bridge consisted of constructing two 1,000' parallel bridges across Disney's environmentally sensitive area. Another Design/Build project was the Tampa Port Authority Berth 201 Wharf Construction project in Tampa, Florida. Value Engineering was utilized with ABAM's waterfront engineers redesigning the facility. The superstructure, which was designed by ABAM, contained more than 8,000 yards of concrete that included 800 precast deck slabs. The entire surface was supported on prestressed composite concrete piles. The deck slabs and piles were produced in the Tampa Yard. Still another Design/Build Project was the Tampa Port Authority Berth 219 Heavy Duty wharf at Hooker's Point, Tampa, Florida. This was a Design/Build project utilizing ABAM's structural engineers for a 400' concrete pile supported wharf. The 50' and 110' concrete piles used for this project were produced at the Tampa Yard.
Standard Concrete recently joined forces with Jacobs to work on the Interstate 75 Peace River Bridge Replacement project for the Florida Department of Transportation. To ensure safety and minimal interference on the original highly traveled bridges, the new 8,000 feet long, 117 feet wide, 113-span bridge was constructed between the two existing bridges. 18" and 24" pile were produced at the Tampa Yard for this project.
Standard Concrete Products, Inc. presently operates three production locations. Each location is responsible for the bidding, design, and production of precast and prestressed concrete components. The Tampa Plant has teamed up with numerous contractors and designers to help make the Design/Build concept a successful reality in the state of Florida. Using state-of- the-art methods in prestressed and precast concrete manufacturing, new and innovative products have been introduced that will become the mainstay of major bridge projects for years to come. These included standard and modified AASHTO beam sections, static cast and full length cylinder pile, innovative sheet pile wall sections, and numerous deck slab components. The Tampa plant currently holds the longest simple supported beam record in the state of Florida at almost 170 feet.
By working with major structural design firms such as HDR, HNTB, Kisinger Campo & Associates, PBS & J. Parsons Transportation Group, Parsons Brinkerhoff, RS & H, Jacobs Civil, Volkert & Associates, Standard Concrete Products, Inc. has produced the majority of Florida Department of Transportation Design/Build Project successfully for their clients.
The Tampa Plant produces a large quantity of Haunch Beams which are designed by Hubert-Janssen & Spaans Engineering. Standard is a part of the Industry Review Committee in Florida. This committee has researched the feasibility of replacing traditional cast-in-place methods with pre-cast concrete substructures. This method was recently approved by the Florida Department of Transportation and Federal Highway Administration. By using the pre-cast concrete substructures we have better quality work, a more timely product, ease of construction for the contractor and the cost is comparable to the traditional cast-in-place method. The engineering/estimating/design work at the Tampa Plant is performed by the Plant Manager, Senior Engineer (P.E.) and one scheduler. The Florida Department of Transportation maintains an office and engineer on site.
The Savannah Plant Engineering Department is made up of a Plant Manager, Senior Engineer (P.E.),two Engineers, one Estimator and four CAD operators. This team provides functional designs for estimating and final product design by the Registered Professional Engineer on staff. Most of the design work for the Savannah and Atlanta Plants is performed in-house by the Standard engineering staff. However, some work is sent to outside firms, i.e. LoBuono-Armstrong & Associates, Tampa, Florida and Heath and Lineback, Atlanta, Georgia. The Shop Drawings and Mix Designs are prepared in-house and presented to owners for approval. DOT Engineers from the states of Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina maintain offices on-site in Savannah and are readily available for consultation. DOT Engineers from the states of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee maintain offices on the premises in Atlanta and are available for consultation when needed. The Savannah engineering staff has been involved with many design/build projects and will continue to assist engineers, contractors, and owners develop prestress concrete components for special conditions.
In July 2005, the Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River in Charleston, SC was officially opened and dedicated. This project was another Design/Build Project .
Standard Concrete Products, Inc. has performed many intricate and sophisticated design projects and welcomes the opportunity to work with your company on any prestressed concrete products you require. We are proud of our history and look forward to sharing our expertise with you.
